Trains around Cobar 1984 to 1986

Cobar yard shunter in 1985

Rail traffic through Cobar in the mid 1980's was concentrates from Elura and CSA mines, grain woo and a weekly local freight. The light 30 kg (63 lb) railed track only permitted the branch line 47, 48 and 49 class locomotives to operate over the line. The line from Cobar north west to the mines was owned and maintained by the mines.

Elura Mine

Elura mine is 45 km by rail north west of Cobar. In the mid 1980's the rail traffic was; a concentrate train to Newcastle every two days, a monthly lead concetrate train to Port Pirrie and a fortnightly cement train from Kandos. A Toyota Dyna crew cab Hi Rail was our only rail vehicle. I used it for track inspection.
