Kalgoorlie is the crossing point between the standard gauge Perth to Port Augusta and Leonora to Esperance lines
Rail traffic through Kalgoorlie in the 1990's consisted of; Perth to Adelaide freights, Sodium Cyanide and lime for the gold miners, Koolianobing to Esperance iron ore trains, Sulphuric acid and nickel matte fom Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to Kwinana and nickel concentrates from Kambalda and Leonora to Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter.

Westrail L 276 is the only non dynamic brake equiped L class. It was purchased second hand from Comalco in 1993. It was photograghed at Kalgoorlie locomotive depot in september 1994.
